Alex Brendemühl is a film and stage actor born in Barcelona to a German father and a Catalan mother. He studied in the Institut del Teatre of Barcelona where he achieved a Degree in Drama in 1993. He speaks five languages catalan, spanish and German (native) and fluent French and English. He is an accomplished musician who plays several instruments including the bassoon and the saxophon.
He started his professional career playing theater , tv series and tv movies. His first leading role in a feature film was in the film Un banco en el parque (Agustí Vila, 1998).
Las horas del dia (Jaime Rosales, 2002) which obtained the Fipresci Prize in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, Cannes made a turning point in his career leading him to take up main roles in films such as En la Ciudad (Cesc Gay, 2002), Inconscientes (Joaquín Oristrell, 2004) and Remake (Roger Gual, 2005).
He is also the co scriptwriter of the film Yo (Rafa Cortes, 2007), winner of the Revelation of the Year Award in the 46th Semaine de la Critique, Cannes.
For his role in Yo, as well as his work in 53 días de invierno (Judith Colell) and El silencio antes the Bach (Pere Portabella) he obtained the Best Actor Award (Premio Sant Jordi) in 2008.
The success of Yo took him to direct his first shortfilm Worstward Ho, which was selected in the Official Selection of the 62th Cannes Film Festival.
El cónsul de Sodoma (Sigfrid Monleón) Die Liebe der Kinder (Franz Müller) Rabia (Sebastián Cordero) and Herois (Pau Freixas) stand out among other titles such as Las dos vidas de Andrés Rabadán (Ventura Durall) , El Bosque (Oscar Aibar) or Stella Cadente (Luís Miñarro).
During the last years he has been cast in films shooting in different countries: Argentina, France and Germany. In Argentina he has played Josef Mengele in Wakolda- The German Doctor (Lucia Puenzo) and Franz Jalics in Il Papa della Gente (Daniele Luchetti). In France he has played a leading role in Le Sanctuaire (Olivier Masset-Depasse) and in Parisiennes (Slony Sow). In Germany he has two films to be released this year Von Zeit Zu Zeit (Johannes Slevert ) and Wann Endlich Küsst du Mich (Julia Ziesche).
Currently he has just finished shooting a feature film called Mal de Pierres ( directed by Nicole Garcia) co- starring french actress Marion Cotillard.
